“The functions of the Paraclete spelled out in verses 13-15... are all acts of open and bold speaking in the highest degree.”- David Fleer

Shri Mataji did not merely speak about the truth; She embodied it, declared it, and, most importantly, made it accessible to all. As Fleer observes, the bold witness of the Paraclete... carries Jesus' teachings into the future, will ensure that the disciples do not face the future alone. Shri Mataji's tireless global mission, Her countless public programs, and Her freely offered gift of Self-Realization constitute precisely this bold witness.
Her life and work are the ultimate fulfillment of Christ's promise: the Paraclete has come, and through Her bold and loving witness, She has guided humanity into all the truth. As She Herself declared: I am here to work for you day and night. You know that I work very hard for you. I spare no efforts, to help you, and do everything that is possible to make you all right; to make you pass this examination of Last Judgment.

David Fleer, Preaching John's Gospel: The World It Imagines
"This fifth and final teaching contains themes with which we are now familiar: the time-limitedness of Jesus' own ministry (v. 12); continuity of the Paraclete's work with that of God and Jesus' (vv. 14-15); the Spirit of truth (v. 13). In fact, this last Paraclete teaching is more important for the way it deepens familiar motifs than for introducing new ones. In these verses Jesus makes explicit how the Paraclete will guide the disciples into their own futures...

The promise of the Paraclete is that the Paraclete will carry the promises of Jesus forward into the ever-changing realities that lie in store for people of faith. This means that as life changes, as new sufferings and new hopes emerge, you will receive a fresh promise and word from Jesus, conveyed to the community through the presence and work of the Paraclete. The functions of the Paraclete spelled out in verses 13-15—"guide you into all the truth," ... "declare to you all things that are to come," "take what is mine and declare it to you"—are all acts of open and bold speaking in the highest degree. The bold witness of the Paraclete ... carries Jesus' teachings into the future, will ensure that the disciples do not face the future alone (cf. 14:18), unequipped with the necessary words of Jesus.”

The Paraclete's Bold Witness: David Fleer's Johannine Interpretation and Ministry of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi

Abstract

This paper examines David Fleer's interpretation of the Paraclete's functions in John 16:13-15 as acts of open and bold speaking in the highest degree and demonstrates how Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, the founder of Sahaja Yoga, fulfills this Johannine promise through Her public ministry. By analyzing the theological significance of the Paraclete's role as guide, witness, and declarer of truth, this study establishes a direct correspondence between the scriptural functions of the Spirit of Truth and the transformative declarations and teachings of Shri Mataji. Her unambiguous proclamations of divine identity, Her conferral of experiential Self-Realization, and Her revelations concerning the present era of Last Judgment constitute the ultimate fulfillment of Christ's promise of the Comforter.

1. Introduction: The Promise of the Spirit of Truth

The Gospel of John presents a unique and profound pneumatology centered on the figure of the Paraclete, the Spirit of Truth, whom Jesus promises to send after His departure. In His final discourse to the disciples, Jesus outlines the functions of this divine Advocate, who will continue His revelatory work on Earth. The Farewell Discourse (John 14-16) contains five distinct Paraclete passages, each revealing different aspects of the Spirit's mission. The fifth and final teaching, found in John 16:12-15, is particularly significant for understanding the nature of the Paraclete's communication with humanity.

Theologian David Fleer, in his scholarly work Preaching John's Gospel: The World It Imagines, provides a crucial insight into this passage. He observes that the Paraclete's primary functions—to guide you into all the truth, declare to you all things that are to come, and take what is mine and declare it to you—are, in essence, all acts of open and bold speaking in the highest degree.[1] This characterization of the Paraclete's ministry as one of parrhesia—bold, frank, and unambiguous speech—provides a powerful framework for understanding how the Spirit of Truth operates in the world.

This paper will argue that Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, the founder of Sahaja Yoga, singularly fulfills this Johannine promise, embodying the Paraclete's role through Her own ministry of unambiguous, public, and transformative declarations. Her life and teachings serve as a direct and living testament to the bold witness that Fleer identifies as the hallmark of the Spirit of Truth.

2. The Johannine Paraclete and the Motif of Bold Speaking

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

The promise of the Paraclete in John's Gospel is not merely for a passive comforter but for an active, revelatory presence. Fleer emphasizes that this fifth Paraclete teaching is more important for the way it deepens familiar motifs than for introducing new ones.[1] The passage establishes three key themes: the time-limitedness of Jesus' own ministry (v. 12), the continuity of the Paraclete's work with that of God and Jesus (vv. 14-15), and the identity of the Paraclete as the Spirit of Truth (v. 13).

Fleer further explains that the promise of the Paraclete is that the Paraclete will carry the promises of Jesus forward into the ever-changing realities that lie in store for people of faith.[1] This requires a dynamic and authoritative communication of truth. The Greek term parrhesia, often translated as boldness or plainness of speech, is central to the Johannine understanding of divine revelation. Jesus Himself speaks with parrhesia, and He promises that the Paraclete will continue this tradition of clear, uncompromising declaration.

Scholar Gilberto A. Ruiz, in his commentary on John 16:12-15, notes that the Spirit's actions are described with future-tense verbs—will guide, will speak, and will declare—signifying a post-Easter ministry that facilitates a fuller understanding of Jesus' revelation without any change to its content.[2] The Spirit does not introduce a new gospel but illuminates the existing one, making it accessible and relevant for all time. As Raymond E. Brown notes, the Spirit enables a deep understanding of what Jesus means for one's own time.[2]

3. The Threefold Function of the Paraclete

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

Daniel B. Stevick, in his comprehensive commentary Jesus and His Own, provides detailed analysis of the Paraclete's verbal actions. He writes that The Spirit's work is described in terms of utterance, identifying a series of specific functions that characterize the Paraclete's ministry.[3] These functions can be organized as follows:

Greek Term English Translation Scripture Reference Function
didasko teach John 14:26 Instruction in divine truth
hypomimnesko remind John 14:26 Recall of Jesus' teachings
martyro testify John 15:26 Witness to Christ
elencho prove wrong John 16:8 Conviction of the world
hodego guide into truth John 16:13 Leading into all truth
laleo speak John 16:13 (twice) Divine communication
anangello declare John 16:13, 14, 15 Proclamation of things to come

Stevick highlights that the threefold repetition of She will declare (anangello) in John 16:13-15 underscores that the things of Christ are a message that must be heralded.[3] He further observes that The Spirit's initiatives imply God's personal engagement with humanity and that the intention of the Spirit of truth is the restoration of an alienated, deceived humanity.[3]

Furthermore, the very grammar of the original texts points to a feminine aspect of the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word for spirit, Ruach ha Kodesh, is a feminine noun. As one theological note clarifies, Where feminine nouns are present with feminine verbs and antecedents, then, according to the laws of Hebrew grammar, the subject spoken of would be feminine—in this case, the Holy Spirit.[4] The Aramaic equivalent ruah is likewise feminine. This feminine dimension, often lost in translation, aligns with the nurturing, guiding, and life-giving role of the Paraclete, who is promised to abide with you forever (John 14:16). Early Christian documents discovered at Nag Hammadi also identify the Holy Spirit as feminine, with the phrase my mother the Holy Spirit appearing in the Gospel According to the Hebrews.[4]

4. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi: The Embodiment of the Paraclete's Bold Witness

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

It is in the person and ministry of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi that Fleer's concept of open and bold speaking finds its ultimate modern expression. On December 2nd, 1979, Shri Mataji made a declaration that stands as a pinnacle of spiritual parrhesia:

But today is the day, I declare that I am the One who has to save the humanity. I declare I am the One who is Adi Shakti, who is the Mother of all the Mothers, who is the Primordial Mother, the Shakti, the Desire of God, who has incarnated on this Earth to give its meaning to itself, to this creation, to human beings, and I'm sure through my love and patience and my powers, I am going to achieve it. I was the One who was born again and again, but now in my complete form and complete powers, I have come on this Earth, not only for salvation of human beings, not only for their emancipation, but for granting them the Kingdom of Heaven, the joy, the bliss, that your Father wants to bestow upon you.[5]

This unambiguous proclamation is not an isolated event but the cornerstone of a four-decade global mission. Shri Mataji repeatedly and publicly identified Herself with the promised Comforter. In New York on September 30, 1980, She stated plainly, I am the Holy Ghost. I am the Holy Spirit who has incarnated on this Earth for your realization.[6] This is the bold witness of the Paraclete in its most direct form, fulfilling the function of testifying and declaring the truth of Her identity and mission.

In San Francisco on September 28, 1983, She further challenged Her audiences with the directness characteristic of the Paraclete's ministry: He's talked about the future. He's talked that He'll send you a Comforter, He'll send you the Holy Ghost, He'll send you the Redeemer, and He'll send you the Counselor. What about that?[8] This rhetorical question exemplifies the Paraclete's function of convicting the world concerning its spiritual blindness.

In Sydney, Australia on April 7, 1981, Shri Mataji explained the necessity of the Paraclete's incarnation: The Holy Ghost has to take a form... to give you the complete picture... with Her voice, and with Her intelligence that is intelligible to you, with the knowledge, and everything.[9] This statement directly addresses the Johannine understanding that the Spirit would speak (laleo) and declare (anangello)—verbal actions requiring a communicative presence.

5. The Paraclete's Declarations Through Shri Mataji

5.1 Guiding Into All Truth

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

Shri Mataji's teachings directly fulfill the Paraclete's function to guide you into all the truth. She did not merely speak of truth as a philosophical concept; She offered the tangible, verifiable experience of it through Self-Realization (Atma-sakshatkar). She declared that the Last Judgment is not a future cataclysm but a present, living process accessible to every individual through the awakening of the Kundalini energy:

This is the Last Judgment time, and everyone can judge him or herself through the light of the Spirit.[7]

This is the ultimate guidance into truth—an inner, experiential validation that transcends blind faith. She further declared: And in this great happening of the Last Judgment and the Resurrection Time, one need not, and should not, believe blindfolded in whatever is said about ascent or salvation, but should treat it like a hypothesis, and observe the facts with an open mind like a scientist.[7] This approach transforms faith into a lived reality felt on one's own central nervous system.

Shri Mataji also proclaimed: So in this Last Judgment a new race, new race of great people is created. It is your own. It is your own power. Only to know how glorious you are. How great you are. Absolutely free because you get that superior intelligence. In the light of Spirit you know what is constructive for you. You know absolute knowledge.[7]

5.2 Declaring Things to Come

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

Similarly, Shri Mataji fulfilled the promise to declare to you all things that are to come. She spoke extensively about the current era as a time of transformation, identifying it with multiple prophetic traditions:

These are the times described in the Holy Bible as 'the Last Judgment' and in the Koran as 'Qiyamah', the Resurrection Time. Astrologically it is also called the Age of Aquarius, the time of rebirth and of great spiritual development on the Earth.[7]

Her warnings about the moral and spiritual crises facing humanity, and Her assurance of a new race of great people born through Sahaja Yoga, constitute a direct declaration of the things to come, providing both a warning and a promise of hope for the future. She declared: In my opinion, every Westerner has, as a matter of urgency, to understand the vital role he has to play in this great Age of Transformation and of the Last Judgment.[7]

5.3 Taking What Is Christ's and Declaring It

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

The Paraclete's function to take what is mine and declare it to you (John 16:14) finds expression in Shri Mataji's consistent affirmation of Christ's teachings while illuminating their deeper significance. She explained the relationship between the time of Christ and the present dispensation:

For us, in between Christ and this destroying incarnation of Mahavishnu called as Kalki, there is a time given to human beings to rectify themselves, for them to enter in the Kingdom of God, which in the Bible is called as the Last Judgment. That you will be judged, all of you will be judged on this earth.[7]

This declaration takes Christ's eschatological teachings and makes them immediately relevant, demonstrating the Paraclete's role in carrying Jesus' teachings into the future so that the disciples do not face the future alone... unequipped with the necessary words of Jesus.[1]

6. Conclusion: The Declaration Fulfilled

Self-Realisation
Lectures with Self-realization notes from 1970-2011

David Fleer's interpretation of the Paraclete's role as one of open and bold speaking in the highest degree provides a powerful lens through which to understand the ministry of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. Her direct, public, and unwavering declarations of Her identity as the Holy Spirit and Adi Shakti, Her conferral of experiential truth through Self-Realization, and Her revelations concerning the present era of Last Judgment align perfectly with the Johannine promise.

The correspondence between the scriptural functions of the Paraclete and Shri Mataji's ministry can be summarized as follows:

Paraclete Function (John 16:13-15) Fulfillment in Shri Mataji's Ministry
Guide you into all the truth Conferral of Self-Realization and experiential knowledge of the Spirit
Declare to you all things that are to come Proclamation of the Last Judgment, Age of Aquarius, and spiritual transformation
Take what is mine and declare it to you Illumination of Christ's teachings and their present relevance
Glorify me (John 16:14) Consistent affirmation of Christ's divinity and mission

Shri Mataji did not merely speak about the truth; She embodied it, declared it, and, most importantly, made it accessible to all. As Fleer observes, the bold witness of the Paraclete... carries Jesus' teachings into the future, will ensure that the disciples do not face the future alone.[1] Shri Mataji's tireless global mission, Her countless public programs, and Her freely offered gift of Self-Realization constitute precisely this bold witness.

Her life and work are the ultimate fulfillment of Christ's promise: the Paraclete has come, and through Her bold and loving witness, She has guided humanity into all the truth. As She Herself declared: I am here to work for you day and night. You know that I work very hard for you. I spare no efforts, to help you, and do everything that is possible to make you all right; to make you pass this examination of Last Judgment.[7]

The Great Adi Shakti Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi
“In between Jesus Christ and His destroying Incarnation of Mahavishnu called as Kalki there is a time given to human beings to rectify themselves, for them to enter into the Kingdom of God, which in the Bible is called as Last Judgment.
The population of the Earth is at the maximum these days because all those - practically all those who had aspirations to enter into the Kingdom of God - are born in modern times and are going to be born very soon. This is the most important times because Sahaja Yoga is the Last Judgment. It is fantastic to hear this but that's the fact. it's the Truth!

Though you can understand that Mother's Love makes it very easy for you to get to your Realization and that the whole story of Last Judgment - which looks such a horrifying experience - has been made very beautiful, and very tender, and delicate, and does not disturb you.”

“But they should also understand that this is the Golden Age of Emancipation, Resurrection and Last Judgment; if we can achieve it, all of us, including them also, will have the blessings of the Divine love which has been promised a long time back.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Of course there are some absurd things which grew with misinterpretation and interference from unholy people, which are common in these religions. For example, Jews, Christian and Muslims believe that when they die their bodies will come out of their graves and they will all be resurrected at the Time of Resurrection, at the Time of Last Judgment, at the Time of Qiyamah. It is illogical to think what will remain inside those graves after five hundred years. Nobody wants to think and understand that it is not the body but the soul that will come out of these bodies, be born again as human beings and be saved through Qiyamah and Resurrection.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"This is the Last Judgment. Either you will go to heaven or you will go to hell. it's already working out like that. So let's see. Where are you? The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"This is the greatest of the greatest things which can happen to anyone that you know. Also you know, this is the greatest happening, which was prophesied long time back as the Last Judgment. You know that this is the way, you are going to be judged. So we have to work very hard. We have to work. It is effortlessly given to you, alright. But to maintain it, keep it up to go high, we have to religiously work it out.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"And that your Last Judgment is also now. Only through Kundalini awakening God is going to judge you. How is he going to judge you otherwise? You think of somebody now, a person comes in now. Here is somebody sitting to judge you. How? By how many hair-dressers you have been to? Or how many suits you have stitched for Christmas? Or what presents you have bought or how many cards you have sent? And to how many people you have sent some other things which may not be very palatable. That's not the way.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"This is the most important time because Sahaja Yoga is the Last Judgment. It is fantastic to have this but that's a fact & is the truth. But this is the Last Judgment I tell you, and you all are going to be judged through Sahaja Yoga, whether, you can enter into the kingdom of God or not.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"The Last Judgment has started. We are facing the Last Judgment today. We are not aware of it. And all the satanic forces have come out like the wolves in sheep's clothes. And they are trying to attract you and you do not judge them. You only sit down and judge the Reality. It has started, it is a fact. It has started.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"That Krishna has said once you get your realisation your problems are solved, physical, emotional, mental, all problems are solved and you become absolutely relaxed. That goes without saying. But I'm not here to sort of cure people and go to hospitals. Nothing of the kind. it's just who are the seekers will be blessed because this is the reward of this Last Judgment.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Christ has said very clearly in the second chapter of Matthew 2nd verse "You'll be calling me Christ! Christ! I won't recognize you.” That's very true. It is not a question of who recognises Him, but He should recognize you because the advent of Christ is going to be absolutely terrible. He is not going to talk to you, convince you or comfort you or give you any council as I am trying my level best, but He will just come for the Last Sorting out because I declare that the Last Judgment has started. The Last Judgment takes place only through Kundalini awakening. There is no other way out. God is going to do it through living process.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"But, logically, you must understand. Where should we reach? What should happen to us? As seekers, what are we expecting? This is a very, very precarious and important time is more to say. The Last Judgment has started. That has started. That's how you are all here and you are seeking. The way it will judge, is the Kundalini has to rise. You have to become self-realized. Then you start feeling your centers on your fingers.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Sahaja Yoga is for the emancipation of the whole world, at every level. Once we have people of a certain number in Sahaja Yoga, it will start triggering understanding of real righteousness, religiousness and our love for God, and enlightened faith in God. This is how the Resurrection time is going to be worked out. This is the Last Judgment time, and everyone can judge him or herself through the light of the Spirit.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"If we have to change this world, and if we have to save our people from complete destruction, we have to take to wisdom, and that is only possible when the brain is enlightened by Kundalini. This is what is very important today, when we see that this world is on the verge of destruction. Of course, the Creator himself is very anxious to save us and that is why he has in these modern times which are called Kali Yuga, made the all-pervading power activated.

So, now a new age has started which is called the Age of Aquarius,

(Kumbha) meaning the pitcher carrier of spiritual holy water that is the work of Kundalini. The activity of the Kundalini is like the sap of the tree that rises and nourishes all parts of the tree and does not get stuck at one flower (centre). Moreover these are special times. This is the resurrection time. The Last Judgment is done by the Kundalini. On the fingertips one can feel oneself and can judge oneself.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Of course, this is also the age of science and technology in which human beings have progressed beyond the stage of blind faith. And in this great happening of the Last Judgment and the Resurrection Time, one need not, and should not, believe blindfolded in whatever is said about ascent or salvation, but should treat it like a hypothesis, and observe the facts with an open mind like a, scientist. Of course, if a hypothesis is proved, then any honest, scientifically minded modern person has to accept it.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Now this is the Last Judgment and those who miss will miss in any case. Christ has said, 'You will be calling Me 'Christ, Christ', but I will not recognize you.' So understand you have to become the Spirit as Christ has said, 'You are to be born again.' You may have faith in me or not - doesn't matter. You must have faith in yourself to begin with.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"But in a way is good because this is Last Judgment. If by marriage, by temptations, by wrong doings, by conditionings if you have to go out, you have to go out.

I must tell you that also there's very little place in the Kingdom of God. Unless and until you prove to be good Sahaja Yogis, there is no place for you, for mediocre there is no place. You have to serious, deep, seeking, dedicated Sahaja Yogis otherwise you have no place.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"So this is the Last Judgment and you will be judged for everything that you do for Sahaja Yoga. One has to be very careful as to how you behave, what is your attitude is and how you should change.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Shri Krishna, as I have told you, was the incarnation of diplomacy. So He plays around quite a lot and ultimately He brings forth the untruth and the falsehood. But in doing that He judges people so it's very important that Shri Krishna's powers of His diplomacy were to be manifesting at this time when it is the Last Judgment.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"Today, Sahaja Yoga has reached the state of Mahayoga, which is en- masse evolution manifested through it. It is this day's Yuga Dharma. It is the way the Last Judgment is taking place. Announce it to all the seekers of truth, to all the nations of the world, so that nobody misses the blessings of the Divine to achieve their meaning, their absolute, their spirit.”

The Paraclete Shri Mataji

"The main thing that one has to understand is that the time has come for you to get all that is promised in the scriptures, not only in the Bible but all the scriptures of the world. The time has come today that you have to become a Christian, a Brahmin, a Pir, through your Kundalini awakening only. There is no other way. And that your Last Judgment is also now.”
